If you're still playing, you have just under three days to pick up a super freebie.

They're discontinuing water and seed spawns in favour of more energy and ingredients. To make up for it, they're including generous amounts of water and seeds in this weekend's freebie, but you need to pick them up before the time window of the event closes.

From the official site...

Witches and wizards,

Today we’re announcing that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will officially close on January 31, 2022. The game will be removed from the App Store, Google Play and Galaxy Store on December 6, 2021, and players will no longer be able to make in-game purchases as of December 6, 2021.Read more... )

Talk about Calamities... Sorry guys. 😢

With thanks to Krebaldar who's done the legwork summarising, here's a short list of the bugs known at present from the forced update of ill repute and how to cope with them (if there's a workaround possible, that is):

* Spell Energy gifts cause the game to crash. (This is known to occur for Extravagant and Regular Spell Energy gifts, and assumed to occur for the Sponsored Spell Energy gifts as well.) Opening a gift causes the game to freeze - on my iphone, it causes an outright app crash, booting me out of the game entirely - and the player can take no other actions. Workarounds - You can avoid opening them, or you can restart the app after opening one. I've tried the latter and can confirm you will receive the spell energy expected.

* Absurdly high number of foes in Wizarding challenges. This one is interesting, because it seems to be triggered by using a Brilliant Event runestone FROM THE CURRENT EVENT. (I can't confirm the distinction as to which BE runestone, because you can't tell what the other players are using unless you're coordinating, but some folks think they've tracked it down to that as the source of the problem.) Players are reporting upwards of 30-70 foes in Dark V when using BE runestones. Each of the Brilliant runestones used adds more foes to the total cumulatively, which means five players, each using BE runestones, will have more foes than the same team where only one is using a Brilliant runestone. Workaround - Since it seems caused only by using Brilliant runestones from this event, avoid using these runestones whenever possible. For the task that requires using them, consider doing so as a solo player in lower chambers where a few additional low level foes won't consume too many additional resources or screw anyone else over. When doing Dark V avoid teaming with people using Brilliant runestones at all costs. (For one thing they clearly aren't as well informed as you 😉 (and who wants to play with rubbish teammates?), and for another it makes the level unnecessarily difficult. If you seem someone using any BE runestone (remember, you can't distinguish), just leave the chamber and join another team. (This may mean leaving the Fortress and taking the Knight Bus elsewhere if you have a Barruffio's going. That's okay.))

* The Portkey screen apparently prompts a new player tutorial. Workaround - Keep at least one unlocked but unopened (aka 'unused') portkey (boot, tea kettle, deflated ball) in your inventory. This will prevent the tutorial from starting.

* General lagginess... No workaround, I'm afraid. 😕 They'll need to fix that on their end. Patience, I am told, is a virtue, my friends.

Well the communication is questionable at best, and I spent a day or so locked out of the app. 😐 With nothing to lose, I've updated now and it works (ish), so I'd recommend trying that. There are still reports of all kinds of bugs coming in (especially the number of adversaries people now find themselves facing in fortresses; some of them are pretty absurd), but updating has thus far solved more problems than it's caused me (mind, they caused those in the first place, so...), but if you're similarly stuck, that would be my recommendation.

If they bring out a new version or bother to update their information, I'll keep you posted. lol
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
There's apparently a serious bug in the new update which messes with your ability to access the daily assignments or event tasks, or gives you a continual restart error.

(I updated the assets and can no longer collect the daily (unclear if that's on my end or server side, the communication is spotty. But! If you update the app as well, then you get the restart error.)

Niantic are... aware and are advising users not to download the update, just not anywhere people are likely to look for the information, because that would be boring.

Anywhoodles, I'll let you know when they come up with a patch. 😘

On the off chance you aren't using the Knight Bus, but have actually ventured out into the world... The Fragments you get from Sponsored Fortresses do not appear to count towards completion of event tasks. (They are, however, awarded, unlike the CD bug that doesn't even give them to you in the first place. (Explained in the previous post in case that doesn't ring a bell.))
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
Midnight to midnight, local time. If you want to complete this event (and again: you don't need to for your registries, this is just about getting a few DADA and red Spell books and keeping those clamouring for more events happy), you'll have to grind at least eight higher level fortresses. Snag: that won't necessarily be possible for lower level players. (That's okay-ish, you don't need those books as badly as the higher level players do.) After the Adversary Event (and back to back events as a whole) chewed through my potions reserves, high level fortresses don't seem too appealing, so for me the Portkeys for the House Hourglass fragments will probably be the best thing about this CD. Note, however, that you can select a from a variety of rare fragments you might need for your registries and by using a specific Fortress Chamber, you'll be able to get it. If your circumstances are different, that might prove nicer for you. Read more... )

If you do nothing else, brew Health Potions and pickup your freebies.

ETA: ATTENTION! THERE'S AN ERROR! YOU COLLECT THE WILD BOAR FRAGMENTS FROM >> FOREST CHAMBER V <<. It's correct in the game task list, but ironically not in their own infographic. Just a heads up in case you're relying on this while fortressing.
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
That's probably not the reaction they're hoping for. lol After this one, we should be all caught up on the events that got squished together thanks to the delays caused by the software updates in March. I wish they didn't feel the need to keep the calendar packed like this, but they don't seem to have anyone in charge at the moment who is willing to say 'no worries, we'll schedule an event in a few months when we have more time / nothing currently planned / etc'.

In order to cast five great (or better) casts in a row (and it is in fact in a row), you need to know which casts you are good at, and you’ll probably need to let some Foundables pass in order not to ruin a streak. Also worth noting, playing a Fortress in between resets your counter, as does an Oddity or Adversary Battle, so make sure to wait with those until you’ve completed (or hopelessly ruined) a run. (The part with Oddities is especially worth noting as they’ve boosted the werewolf for this event, and Fortresses because the same set of tasks also requires you to defeat 15 fortress foes.) Just keep these things in mind to save yourself some frustration.
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
Our lovely OrangeWizard is apparently a bit poorly atm (if I had any clue how to show support, I’d pass it along) but ProfessorKitana has stepped up and made an infographic for the event. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS ANOTHER SHORTENED EVENT WITH AN UNUSAL START TIME. (One guess who didn’t finish last week’s brilliant event because 1) the servers went DOWN the evening before (while I had TFTD and BBE and very little free time, no words for how annoyed I am retroactively) and 2) I didn’t notice the damn thing ended early. There will be a Dark Arts Spotlight Event this weekend, from Friday, 12 March, 11 a.m. PST through Monday, 15 March 15, 11 a.m. PST.

This is much like last weekend's spotlight event of no previous notice (except: notice!) and is an excellent way to get a bunch of XP quickly.

You can expect to see increased Dark Arts traces from Knockturn Alley and Fallen Ministry Atrium Registry pages, including:
Hag
Executioner
Thestral (I know [livejournal.com profile] erexen was looking forward to those)
Swooping Evil !!!! (forgive me, some excitement occurred 😃)
Portrait of Bellatrix Lestrange
Percival Graves
Portrait of Voldemort
Tom Riddle

and Increased Challenge XP from completing an Adversaries chain Encounter. (The key word there for some players is going to be "completing"...)

There's no word yet on whether we'll be seeing a Brilliant Event next week or not, so I can't give you any advice about how to best use your resources. If you care about completing your registries, it will be a good idea to keep some supplies in reserve just in case. If you care more about advancement, or getting those Ministry Manuals (and possibly DADA Manuals), then go whole hog, same if you're in a position to refill your supplies quickly / soonish.

Either way, have fun, my witchards, and stay safe out there. ❤️
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
Good day, my lovelies!

Many of you will have noticed that we didn't have a Brilliant Event this week as anticipated. They apparently put it off so they could finish the next update to the game first, not bad per se, but naturally there were... ISSUES! Firstly, this is a forced update. If you start the game, you'll be forced to update (and cheers, guys, thanks for that, I was trying to wrap up my daily and open my gifts...). This in and of itself wouldn't be so evil, if it didn't mean the update rendered the game effectively unplayable for most. (Reports have varied as to what folks ran into, but for me it would load an encounter without ever giving me the spell to perform to deal with it. It was effectively stalled.)

SOLUTION: Downloading the assets fixed the playability issue for me. Not everyone is that lucky. (On the map, click Suitcase (lower middle) -> click Gears (upper left) -> scroll down until you reach the red dot for your assets and either "Download All Assets" or "Download Essential Assets" as you wish. "All Assets" saves on roaming data and makes the game faster but requires more physical memory on your phone. "Essential Assets" is basically the opposite.)

THE MASSIVE PROBLEM: They haven't cleaned up the data at all. So if you do this, it wants over 10 GIG of space on your device, which is bonkers. (Basically it's more than doubled.)

But, y'know, on the positive side, I can see the pictures from the gifts again. Woohoo. /s (Okay, I sort of missed those. Still.)

Other than that...

Game Update 2.17.0

General/Bug Fixes
* Fixed Adventure Sync issue that occurred when enabling and disabling the feature.
* Fixed iOS purchasing issue that prevented some players from purchasing or claiming complimentary items in Diagon Alley.
* Fixed SOS Newsletter. (Note: this would actually be a help, except for me it still doesn't look fixed. There's a spotlight event coming up, but the in app info is thin, the link non-functional for me. So... maybe not so fixed? Who knows. (When the revolution comes, their quality department will join the lawyers and PR people against Douglas Adams' metaphorical wall.) I'll try to get info on the mini-event and post it here later.)
* Fixed issue with images not appearing on Gifting screen.
* Adjusted the SOS Training Tree so that the Southern Cooking node does not block progression to other nodes.
* Fixed issue with game freezing when a player enters the app via push notification.
* Fixed issue with players automatically being kicked out of an Adversary encounter when they do not cast offensive or defensive spells for two consecutive rounds.

PSA: Speaking of Adversary encounters... You can pause them at any time by clicking on the foe's avatar in the upper right. Useful when something else demands your attention during those minutes.

So... What do you do? Well, you can delete the app and do a clean reinstall and come out without the over-inflated memory issue. (They save all your info, so it works.) Doing this means you'll have to click your way through the red dots of hell, though. Or you can try letting it clutter up your phone for a little while (presupposing you have the memory available for it) and hope a future update sorts it soonish. Hmm.

And Merlin's fuzzy Knutsack, UNLESS YOU HAVE UNLIMITED DATA: DO NOT update your assets or do a reinstall unless you're on wifi.

Wish I had better news, but it is what it is. Smooches anyway, G. ❤️

Part 2 of the Imperfect Love Brilliant Event runs from Tuesday, 23 February at 11am PT through 02 March. Orange Wizard has again made us some infographics to better prepare...

Keep in mind this is a week long event and pace yourself. Your registry will not be incomplete if you don't finish (or even attempt) the bonus. Completing the bonus is a way not to have to unlock five Event Portkeys however. (Worth a think. 😉) If you do nothing else, don’t forget to pick up your free TFTD ingredients and Spell Energy.

Good luck, my witchards. Let me know how you do. ❤️

Tomorrow is Snape's birthday, and hpwu is having a day long event to mark the occasion. It runs from midnight to midnight local time.

Rather oddly, they don't seem to have reduced brewing times for any potions... lol However, there are guaranteed fragments dropped from certain fortress chambers. Note: it doesn't matter which family Runestone is used. These fragments are in addition to those that might otherwise drop based on the chamber and Runestone used. The snag here (as in the past) remains that if the first person into the chamber is not in a time zone in which the event is active, then all individuals in the chamber probably won't see those rewards either. To be on the safe side, during the event in your time zone, try to be the first person into a chamber, and once the event has ended / or before it's started, try not to be the first. That will increase your chances of getting those fragments.
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
Heads up, my witchards! You can use ANY type of Runestone in the Tower, Forest, and Dark V chambers to get the guaranteed Fragment rewards. You don’t need to use a family Runestone to get them, so this may be the time to use some of those extra brilliant event Runestones, say.
