With thanks to Krebaldar who's done the legwork summarising, here's a short list of the bugs known at present from the forced update of ill repute and how to cope with them (if there's a workaround possible, that is):

* Spell Energy gifts cause the game to crash. (This is known to occur for Extravagant and Regular Spell Energy gifts, and assumed to occur for the Sponsored Spell Energy gifts as well.) Opening a gift causes the game to freeze - on my iphone, it causes an outright app crash, booting me out of the game entirely - and the player can take no other actions. Workarounds - You can avoid opening them, or you can restart the app after opening one. I've tried the latter and can confirm you will receive the spell energy expected.

* Absurdly high number of foes in Wizarding challenges. This one is interesting, because it seems to be triggered by using a Brilliant Event runestone FROM THE CURRENT EVENT. (I can't confirm the distinction as to which BE runestone, because you can't tell what the other players are using unless you're coordinating, but some folks think they've tracked it down to that as the source of the problem.) Players are reporting upwards of 30-70 foes in Dark V when using BE runestones. Each of the Brilliant runestones used adds more foes to the total cumulatively, which means five players, each using BE runestones, will have more foes than the same team where only one is using a Brilliant runestone. Workaround - Since it seems caused only by using Brilliant runestones from this event, avoid using these runestones whenever possible. For the task that requires using them, consider doing so as a solo player in lower chambers where a few additional low level foes won't consume too many additional resources or screw anyone else over. When doing Dark V avoid teaming with people using Brilliant runestones at all costs. (For one thing they clearly aren't as well informed as you šŸ˜‰ (and who wants to play with rubbish teammates?), and for another it makes the level unnecessarily difficult. If you seem someone using any BE runestone (remember, you can't distinguish), just leave the chamber and join another team. (This may mean leaving the Fortress and taking the Knight Bus elsewhere if you have a Barruffio's going. That's okay.))

* The Portkey screen apparently prompts a new player tutorial. Workaround - Keep at least one unlocked but unopened (aka 'unused') portkey (boot, tea kettle, deflated ball) in your inventory. This will prevent the tutorial from starting.

* General lagginess... No workaround, I'm afraid. šŸ˜• They'll need to fix that on their end. Patience, I am told, is a virtue, my friends.

Well the communication is questionable at best, and I spent a day or so locked out of the app. 😐 With nothing to lose, I've updated now and it works (ish), so I'd recommend trying that. There are still reports of all kinds of bugs coming in (especially the number of adversaries people now find themselves facing in fortresses; some of them are pretty absurd), but updating has thus far solved more problems than it's caused me (mind, they caused those in the first place, so...), but if you're similarly stuck, that would be my recommendation.

If they bring out a new version or bother to update their information, I'll keep you posted. lol
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
There's apparently a serious bug in the new update which messes with your ability to access the daily assignments or event tasks, or gives you a continual restart error.

(I updated the assets and can no longer collect the daily (unclear if that's on my end or server side, the communication is spotty. But! If you update the app as well, then you get the restart error.)

Niantic are... aware and are advising users not to download the update, just not anywhere people are likely to look for the information, because that would be boring.

Anywhoodles, I'll let you know when they come up with a patch. 😘

[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
Warning. There are server issues atm which make Knight Bus fortresses (possibly all fortresses) and gifts an issue. Test the Knight Bus to see if it’s working before quaffing a BBE. (Remember you can back out of the encounter without losing a Runestone as long as you don’t join a chamber.)

From the HPWU team:
> Hi everyone,

> We are looking into server errors impacting the Knight Bus. Stay tuned on this thread for an update.

> If you are experiencing a login loop, please share your username and we will manually fix your account. Thank you!

ETA: Seem to be fixed.

Good day, my lovelies!

Many of you will have noticed that we didn't have a Brilliant Event this week as anticipated. They apparently put it off so they could finish the next update to the game first, not bad per se, but naturally there were... ISSUES! Firstly, this is a forced update. If you start the game, you'll be forced to update (and cheers, guys, thanks for that, I was trying to wrap up my daily and open my gifts...). This in and of itself wouldn't be so evil, if it didn't mean the update rendered the game effectively unplayable for most. (Reports have varied as to what folks ran into, but for me it would load an encounter without ever giving me the spell to perform to deal with it. It was effectively stalled.)

SOLUTION: Downloading the assets fixed the playability issue for me. Not everyone is that lucky. (On the map, click Suitcase (lower middle) -> click Gears (upper left) -> scroll down until you reach the red dot for your assets and either "Download All Assets" or "Download Essential Assets" as you wish. "All Assets" saves on roaming data and makes the game faster but requires more physical memory on your phone. "Essential Assets" is basically the opposite.)

THE MASSIVE PROBLEM: They haven't cleaned up the data at all. So if you do this, it wants over 10 GIG of space on your device, which is bonkers. (Basically it's more than doubled.)

But, y'know, on the positive side, I can see the pictures from the gifts again. Woohoo. /s (Okay, I sort of missed those. Still.)

Other than that...

Game Update 2.17.0

General/Bug Fixes
* Fixed Adventure Sync issue that occurred when enabling and disabling the feature.
* Fixed iOS purchasing issue that prevented some players from purchasing or claiming complimentary items in Diagon Alley.
* Fixed SOS Newsletter. (Note: this would actually be a help, except for me it still doesn't look fixed. There's a spotlight event coming up, but the in app info is thin, the link non-functional for me. So... maybe not so fixed? Who knows. (When the revolution comes, their quality department will join the lawyers and PR people against Douglas Adams' metaphorical wall.) I'll try to get info on the mini-event and post it here later.)
* Fixed issue with images not appearing on Gifting screen.
* Adjusted the SOS Training Tree so that the Southern Cooking node does not block progression to other nodes.
* Fixed issue with game freezing when a player enters the app via push notification.
* Fixed issue with players automatically being kicked out of an Adversary encounter when they do not cast offensive or defensive spells for two consecutive rounds.

PSA: Speaking of Adversary encounters... You can pause them at any time by clicking on the foe's avatar in the upper right. Useful when something else demands your attention during those minutes.

So... What do you do? Well, you can delete the app and do a clean reinstall and come out without the over-inflated memory issue. (They save all your info, so it works.) Doing this means you'll have to click your way through the red dots of hell, though. Or you can try letting it clutter up your phone for a little while (presupposing you have the memory available for it) and hope a future update sorts it soonish. Hmm.

And Merlin's fuzzy Knutsack, UNLESS YOU HAVE UNLIMITED DATA: DO NOT update your assets or do a reinstall unless you're on wifi.

Wish I had better news, but it is what it is. Smooches anyway, G. ā¤ļø

There are two mini events this week, sort of out of left field, presumably because they really are serious about it being a test of a new game mechanic. Fingers crossed.

Supposedly fixes bugs... Some kind souls went ahead and installed it, here's what they had to say:

The following things (at minimum) are not fixed in 2.15.1:
Beam colors
Red dot
Startup error message
Baby Norwegian Ridgeback
Herd immunity node locked from the side
Combat rating after buying an SOS node

List of more here.

Reports of a new bug: some portkeys just go to black screen after opening them and then disappear. Unclear if rewards were given. (It might be a good idea to screenshot vault totals before opening Portkeys just to be on the safe side. (Just the totals should be sufficient if you remember to do it before and after.) If you can clearly quantify the loss (possible ingredients, energy, XP, and possibly in game currencies, depending on which Portkeys) there's always a chance that support will adjust it manually.)

No one seems to know what it did for sure. From the PoGo community, indications are this might be the first step towards reducing the coronavirus changes (in our case: increased energy spawns, TFTD brew times halved, TFTD spawns trebled), we just aren't seeing them play out as yet. Brilliant indeed.

If you want to keep playing, DO NOT UPDATE TO IOS14 until you get a wizards unite app update!

HPWU in its current version will crash on iOS 14. The developers were late and couldn’t roll the fixed update out before iOS14 went live. Do not update to iOS 14 before the new HPWU app update is out, or else you won’t be able to use the app.

This is important because of the Brilliant Event happening right now. They've apparently said the update will be available tomorrow... Here's hoping.

How to turn off auto ios updates:

Open the Settings app and scroll down to the General tab.
* Tap the Software Update tab.
* Tap "Automatic Updates."
* On the next page, toggle the switch off (so it turns white instead of green).

Reverse the process to turn them back on.

ETA: Fixed. The new version of hpwu is available in the app store. Download it and upgrade your iOS.

Part 1 of the Battle of the Department of Mysteries Brilliant Event starts Tuesday, 15 September at 11am PST and runs through 22 September. Once again, things have been adjusted to allow for playing from home. (shorter portkeys etc.)

OrangeWizard has put together infographics to help us better complete the tasks...

If you do nothing else, don’t forget to pick up your free TFTD ingredients and 25 Spell Energy.

Stay safe out there, have fun and good luck. ā¤ļø

Warning: the server issues are kicking off again. There are many reports of people stuck in loops now after trying to play fortresses. The recommendation is to avoid them for a little while at least until they give the hamsters running the wheels more treats.

If you're locked out, you can contact Niantic for assistance. niantic.helpshift.com

"There was a bug where the Trace Charm sometimes provides duplicate Traces. This fix will be pushed shortly and players will no longer see identical Traces revealed by the Trace Charm." (from Lola of the HPWU team)

The so-called fix may or may not have some issues, and they may have borked it worse than intended. Either way, presently the Trace Charm doesn't behave as it used to. Multiple random traces appear instead of several of one kind.

From our new community manager HPWU LOLA: ā€œWe are investigating an issue with players experiencing Connection Lost errors after entering a Fortress or the Knight Bus. Please avoid Wizarding Challenges until we can resolve this. Thank you!ā€

ETA: and by now you'll have probably seen the in game announcement to this effect. I'm not sure if I'll still be up when they fix it, so just keep your eyes peeled. Now that they've gotten around to acknowledging the bug in the game, I have hopes they'll do the same when it's patched.

This means most of us are gated on Task 2. eh. It's a week long event, so it's a marathon and not a sprint. There are worse things... (like if this holds for the rest of the week... lol)

UPDATE! From HPWU LOLA ā€œThank you for your patience. We resolved this issue and players can now participate in Wizarding Challenges in Fortresses and the Knight Bus.ā€

Please restart the app for the fix to take effect.
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
You may have already seen the in game announcement. They've fixed the issues with the Knight Bus and Fortresses, and players should be good to use them now. If you are still locked out of the game, even after restarts, you'll need to contact Niantic support via their website.

To make up for the problems this caused, they've extended the event by twelve hours. It will now end on 27 July at 11 pm PT (What time is that where you are?). It's possible you may not be able to see that extension reflected in the event timer as yet.

As to other problems...

People seem to be having difficulty getting the required number of foundables together to complete the task, no matter how many TFTD they use. (I've used at least four TFTD and still only have 4 Lupins to show for it, and I definitely don't have fifteen of them to throw at this event.) That's okay. The rewards aren't too great, your registries won't have any gaps if you don't finish, and the point wasn't to make you deplete your potions, but to have you figure some things out about your SOS Training trees.

I'll try to put together a separate post to talk about them a little. It may not be able to help you finish, but it should help you progress through those Registries.
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com

[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
From our new Community manager Lola over on the HPWU site:

'"Hi everyone. We want to thank you for your patience as we have been investigating the on-going bugs caused during the 2.13.0 update. Over the weekend, our team investigated accounts impacted by these issues and we have determined there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to restore fragments regardless of if fragments went missing around the 2.13.0 update or after our fix. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. With that said, we are discussing how to offset those losses with other make-good solutions and will have more information on this soon.

I want to assure you that we understand the frustrations this experience has caused and we will continue to be mindful as future updates come to the game. Thank you all."

I'm just not going to comment on it beyond saying it doesn't sound like we're getting the missing fragments back. 😢

ETA: On questioning they have now added 'it is safe to place and prestige images.' Presumably because no further changes are going to be taking place. šŸ˜•
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
Heya, I haven't forgotten you guys. The bug is *still* not fixed. šŸ˜• (And I imagine the demonstrations in the US aren't really conducive to things like patching bugs on weekends either.) One of the mini event's requirements is 800 MG&S Family XP, however, and as you may have discovered, that's difficult to accrue without at least placing things, if not prestiging them.

So if you are stuck on that assignment, it's entirely up to you at this point whether it's worth clicking on the registry images, placing the Foundables and having things potentially not count down the road or not. At this point, unless you've kept records of your fragment counts, it's too much of a tangle to know how many you *should* have anyway, so you probably aren't even in much of a situation to get it straightened out with support. (People who have kept far better records than I (and I take a silly amount of screenshots for research) weren't able to, so personally I gave up worrying about it and placed the damn things. But again, mileage varies.) Good luck. šŸ€
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
From the hpwu website:

Update: We're working on a fix to restore placed Images. Please avoid Prestiging pages until a fix has been released.

We're investigating an issue affecting Images that were marked with the green 'placed' icon with accounts who received Fragments that were lost from May 7th. If you did not receive Fragments from May 7th, the green 'placed' icons should be unaffected on your account.

ETA: Update on fix:
We've begun the process of rolling out a fix
We will be testing the fix within the hour. Once we've verified that the fix is working, we're working to release it as soon as today (5/27)

Summary of the issue:
The Images that received restored Fragments with this fix lost associated data, which includes the Placement status, Seen #, Returned #, and Location Found. This is what caused the Green Star and Seen details to disappear from those images. We keep backups of this information so a fix would involve restoring this info. (5/28)
