On the off chance you aren't using the Knight Bus, but have actually ventured out into the world... The Fragments you get from Sponsored Fortresses do not appear to count towards completion of event tasks. (They are, however, awarded, unlike the CD bug that doesn't even give them to you in the first place. (Explained in the previous post in case that doesn't ring a bell.))
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
Midnight to midnight, local time. If you want to complete this event (and again: you don't need to for your registries, this is just about getting a few DADA and red Spell books and keeping those clamouring for more events happy), you'll have to grind at least eight higher level fortresses. Snag: that won't necessarily be possible for lower level players. (That's okay-ish, you don't need those books as badly as the higher level players do.) After the Adversary Event (and back to back events as a whole) chewed through my potions reserves, high level fortresses don't seem too appealing, so for me the Portkeys for the House Hourglass fragments will probably be the best thing about this CD. Note, however, that you can select a from a variety of rare fragments you might need for your registries and by using a specific Fortress Chamber, you'll be able to get it. If your circumstances are different, that might prove nicer for you. Read more... )

If you do nothing else, brew Health Potions and pickup your freebies.

ETA: ATTENTION! THERE'S AN ERROR! YOU COLLECT THE WILD BOAR FRAGMENTS FROM >> FOREST CHAMBER V <<. It's correct in the game task list, but ironically not in their own infographic. Just a heads up in case you're relying on this while fortressing.

What November in HPWU has in store for us... Brilliant Events, Community Day and a second Wizarding Weekend.

[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
We've had initial reports from the people in Asia who are living in tomorrow that although it was advertised, there will be no reduction in TFTD brew time for the Community Day event Sunday, so be sure to brew what you can / what you'll need on Saturday.

Also I wanted to point out for anyone else that's short on energy, we're required to quaff the Exstimulo potions (any of them, the kind apparently doesn't matter) during a fortress battle, we are not, however, required to use that energy during a fortress challenge, so it's possible to battle lower level fortresses, save the potion for the last shot, return to the map, and use the added boost to your power to help you return the... geez, 70 Foundables tomorrow's event requires. In the first two Chambers, you should generally be able to one shot your foes anyway.

As far as saving energy goes, it's also worth considering, if you aren't a Professor already, taking some of those extra scrolls, red spell books and RSBs you probably have lying around and completing the Professor's lessons to the extent you max the Deterioration Hex. (I did something similar with the Auror's lessons for the last Brilliant Event, because I was sick and tired of wasting all that energy as a Professor fighting Oddities.) The Deterioration Hex, when maxed, will take 40 Stamina from your foe in a fortress battle with each hit he lands on you, and it's possible in two to four rounds to kill a foe in the first two Chambers just by waiting it out and using no energy or potions whatsoever. Obviously if you're fighting with other people, make sure to pull your weight; it's an issue because that approach takes longer. Basically it's okay to use energy on all but the last opponent and allow the Deterioration Hex to sort the last opponent for you. (Managing it that way means you aren't leaving unaddressed foes hanging about in the lobby, thereby tacitly forcing your teammates to take them on for you, and you're only extending the match by a few seconds for the others by drawing things out with your last opponent. Mind, with more foe Stamina, those seconds add up...)

October's more Fortress-centric Community Day takes place tomorrow Sunday 18 October all day from 12:01am till 11:59pm local time. Special Assignments will reward 3 DADA books, 3 Spellbooks, a Silver Key, 40 Gold, 20 Energy, some potions and some ingredients. In the past, there have been issues with Fortress bonuses not being properly received unless a person in an active Community Day time zone enters the Fortress chamber first. (To be on the safe side, it helps to be the first person into the chamber. On the other hand, if the bug persists, it allows us to extend the bonuses as long as someone else enters first.) It's still unclear if this has been fixed or not.

As usual, the ever magnificent OrangeWizard has been so lovely as to make us some infographics with the details and tasks:

Similarly to September's CD Event, that's 70 Foundables we need to return, which for me at least means 3 TFTD and a boatload of energy or a lot of energy and potions. The good news remains that the Tonics will brew much more quickly, but frankly we just had that same perk the day before, and I don't know about you, but I just don't have enough ingredients for that to be much help on back to back days. So yeah, once again, unfortunately that's about it on that front. Especially as that's in addition to 5 Fortress Challenges fought. My complaint about Energy spawns remains as well, and yet again the rewards are pretty paltry compared with August's 5 Spellbooks, 30 Field Guides, 5 Ministry Manuals, 13 Runestones, 100 Gold, 70 Energy, a Potent Exstimulo potion and ingredients.

I'll repeat this in case anyone missed it: the Community manager has said they'll be adjusting part 2 of the Brilliant Event to make it more playable due to rampant complaints about part 1 (and as a Professor, I found it particularly galling), but poorly balanced events like this one aren't exactly making me optimistic. I've already sat this month's Wizarding Weekend out because it was all but unplayable for me, and the rewards simply weren't worth any effort to try to change that. Keep in mind, part 2 of the Brilliant Event is coming up Tuesday, and this is a lot of energy we'll need for... what? At present my strategy is trying to save my energy for the Brilliant Events, because those at least make a difference to my registry. Hmm. All I can say to that is I seriously hope Niantic gets their shit together and looks more closely at balancing some of the game's mechanics, because holy cricket...

Yes, September. You may recall September's Community Day had to be postponed, well now it's time to make up for it. The "September" Community Day takes place Saturday 17 October all day from 12:01am till 11:59pm local time. Special Assignments will reward 3 DADA books, 3 Spellbooks, 5 Runestones, 40 Gold, 20 Energy, some potions and some ingredients. In the past, there have been issues with bonuses not being properly received from Fortresses unless a person in an active Community Day time zone enters the Fortress chamber first. (To be on the safe side, it helps to be the first person into the chamber. On the other hand, if the bug persists, it allows us to extend the bonuses as long as someone else enters first.) Unclear if this bug has been fixed.

Frankly that's 80 Foundables we need to return, which will take me at least 3 TFTD. The good news is the Tonics will brew much more quickly, but unfortunately that's about it for the good news. Ah, and that's in addition to 10 Fortress foes defeated. Energy spawns have been just dismal lately, and the rewards are pretty paltry compared with August's 5 Spellbooks, 30 Field Guides, 5 Ministry Manuals, 13 Runestones, 100 Gold, 70 Energy, a Potent Exstimulo potion and ingredients. The Community manager has said they'll be adjusting part 2 of the Brilliant Event to make it more playable due to rampant complaints about part 1, but the cost : benefit ratio of this CD hasn't got me precisely hopeful, particularly as Sunday is October's CD, and energy will be an issue for many of us, forcing me to conclude with a resounding: meh.

I'll post more details when they're announced, but at least you know what to expect when. Community manager Fazes has unfortunately moved on, and things haven't quite settled into a new routine yet.

Here's wishing Fazes all the best with her new endeavours. 🍀

ETA: Orangewizard has posted this on twitter: they're overhauling the entire game, so don't expect anything in regards to new lesson plans, new skill tree, new chambers or new runestone levels AT ALL ;) all speculation is a waste of time at the moment...
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
I've seen some confusion occur about this one, so I thought it might be worth mentioning. At present, there's a bug that means if you turn off the Battery Saving Mode, it automatically enables the AR Mode in Encounters and Fortress battles. (And why, you ask, might one want to do that? There have been reports that turning off the Battery Saver improved the Portkey distance tracking, so some folks have given it a go. My battery runs down too quickly to be able to confirm that, but I have tested and can confirm that the bug does turn on AR mode.)

Not having AR Mode enabled saves a little time. Given the nature of the Community Day, Fortressing with teams of strangers, it might be worth thinking about turning on your Battery Saver to not keep your fellow players waiting on you.

From hpwulola over on the harrypotterwizardsunite.com website:

"Hi everyone. We wanted to provide a status update on the next steps we are working on to resolve the bugs caused when the 2.13.0 Game Update was released last week.

We have come up with a solution that will safely add back Fragments players lost due to the issues with last week’s release. While we don’t have an exact timeframe for when this fix will be implemented (hopefully within the next week or so), we are comprehensively QA testing this fix to ensure it doesn’t result in any additional issues. We know that you are eager to see this fix, so we appreciate your patience this week as we work to get this out the door. When we confirm the results of this fix are successful, we will update you with more details and a timeline of when you can expect to see these changes in your account.

We want to reassure you all that our planned fix will restore your lost Fragments without performing any rollback. Rest assured that gameplay progress players have made since these bugs have occurred will be unchanged. We hope to see you all on the Knight Bus this weekend during Community Day!

As a token of our appreciation for your patience, we will also be adding a complimentary store pack to Diagon Alley for all players sometime next week. We want to thank you for your support as our team works hard to resolve these bugs.

- The Harry Potter: Wizards Unite team"

Emphasis mine. I fear we won't be seeing those lovely, lovely potions I was counting on for today's Fortress event until next week... 😢 Fingers crossed this solves the problem and doesn't create new ones.
[identity profile] gingerbred.livejournal.com
Crap! There's a bug. People have reported not receiving their guaranteed Fragment drop. Trial and error have demonstrated that it depends on the player who enters the Chamber's waiting room first. If a player in a time zone where the Community Day is already taking place enters first, everybody gets the bonuses (extra energy and guaranteed fragment). If a player who has not begun Community Day enters first, nobody gets the bonuses. If you are currently taking part in the CD, you have to enter the Chamber first in order to know it will count. That causes obvious issues.

Apparently Fazes has confirmed this to be the case, and they are presently deciding what to do about it. (If past errors along these lines hold, they're likely to make a 48 hour event out of it for everyone.)

May's Fortress-centric Community Day will take place next weekend on Saturday 16 May all day from 12:01am till 11:59pm local time. <- Yes, local time. Special Assignments will reward 7 Spellbooks, 100 energy, 100 Gold, and potions ingredients.
